The preliminary was a elocution competition and the finals was of the debate format. The finals was conducted by the Tamil Mandram guys in a format similar to the Pattimandram shows in TV. College Nostalgia and a shot of paneer soda

Posted by Saravanan Sachithanantham as college, nit, rec, trichy

Before i begin with the details of this post, i was surprised to see a comment in my last blog entry asking whether this is a dead blog. Yes, it is true that this blog has been dead for the past 3 months. During this time i have been busy with good and important things in my personal life. Ofcourse, there were hiccups but as usual they have taught me lessons worth for leading a good life in the future. Anyways i am not trying to justify by giving valid reasons for keeping my blog in hibernation. The fact is I was lazy and my access to internet was limited during this period. Ok let me in jump in to the details of this particular entry.Last week I was in trichy and had to visit my alma matter for getting some paper work done. For the uninitiated I graduated in 2003 from Instrumentation and Control Engg. Department of REC,Trichy( now popularly known as NIT,Trichy). I had visited the veeramakali amman temple situated in a village nearby keeranur along with my family on the morning of 22nd September 2008. On the way back to home, at around 12.30 am my family dropped me off in the main entrance of NIT trichy and they headed home. So here I was almost five years after my graduation in front of the well known administrative block. On a philosophical note, life has its interesting twists and turns, it takes it own course and as humans i guess its better if we just follow it rather than try to change the course. Yes, I am ashamed that i have not visited REC Trichy in the past five years after my graduation but thats the truth and i accept it with a sense of remorse. Anyways, with a sense of nostalgia i was in my college campus trying to see if something has changed. Everything looked similar including the small shortcuts which i used to walk to my department from admin block. There were some new buildings(the lecture hall complex),better paved pathways for walking and remarkably glaring blue colored boards in front of each department. So i reached my department during the lunch hours and hence it was deserted. Had a look around the department, captured a photograph of it and then i headed to straight to the college canteen for lunch. Bought a lunch coupon for 20 rupees and enjoyed the meal in the canteen. It was like i became a student again and interestingly people around me in the canteen thought i was a student there.I happily shared some thoughts with them, had a nice lunch and surprisingly when i was washing my hands, i bumped in to three of my past teachers. I wished them, refreshed their memories and told them politely that I will meet them in the department in the afternoon hours and again started walking around the college. So after walking a bit in the hot sun i came back to the department at around 2.30 pm and headed straight in to my past lecturer’s cabin. He had taught me PCI(Personal computers and interfacing) and OOD(object oriented design) if my memory is correct. Had a nice technical talk with him for about an hour. He was interested in knowing what i was working on and he(as usual) gave some inputs on whats hot in the industry and what isn’t. After meeting him i met the lecturer under whom i did my final year project and had a talk with her about how the department student strength has considerably gained over last few years. Then i met the HOD and other lecturers who had taught me during my bachelors. I was not able to meet only one professor who had taught me control systems,Data structures and other courses. Then i went to the ever famous juicy in NITT and had a mango juice. After that i returned back to the admin block to get my paper work done and was thinking of returning home once it is done. Then it was more by destiny than by design that I met the professor whom i did not meet in the department. The staff in the admin block doing my paper work was little bit miffed with me(for reasons i am unable to comprehend yet) and he made sure he delayed the process a bit. That in turn, made me wait a bit longer and as a result of this, i bumped in to my professor in the IC and SR(industrial consultancy and sponsored research) department. Talked with him for few minutes and then got the paper work done in the admin block. In my heart, i thanked the staff who made sure i waited longer but externally i clearly expressed him that i was upset. I returned home via tiruverumbur by bus. The buses were crowded as usual and the ever so friendly people made me feel at home. Contrastingly the wait in tiruverumbur for taking a bus to OFT(Ordnance Factory Trichy) was much shorter this time. Based on empirical data residing in my mind, i knew that it would take really long for me to see a bus destined to OFT. So with composure, I ordered paneer soda(sweet carbonated water) in a shop and was slowly sipping it. Then to my surprise, i found that a bus to OFT has arrived. I made sure it is OFT by rubbing my eyes and clearly seeing that again(:) yeah thats an exaggeration). Only me and some of my friends whom i had taken home during my college days know the average wait time is usually much longer. Thereby instead of sipping the paneer soda further i had it in one shot and ran hard to catch the bus. I was just in time to be on the footsteps of the crowded bus. Enjoyed my footstep travel experience back home. All in all i had a nice time being in NITT again.

Festember, the most expected event of the semester, began a bit late as usual. The Dance Troupe of NITT performed three dance sequences to entertain the audience and gather the crowds. That was used as a ‘Crowd-Pulling Technique.’ Soon after their performance we had the inaugural ceremony.

Then we had quite a bit of delay due to various technical errors. First, the publicity video about
