The kite runner..
It has been almost a month since I read ‘The kite runner’ and I’ve been meaning to write about it ever since. But that did not happen for long and when I got back to posting a few days back, I almost thought I would forget the impact the book had on me. Quite unbelievable I must say! Its characters, the contrasts, the plot, the obvious and the not so obvious, each and every part of the book touch you more than you would expect. No spoilers intended, so I won’t say anything more than the fact that you just cannot miss this book.
“It was only a smile, nothing more. It didn’t make everything all right. It didn’t make anything all right. Only a smile. A tiny thing. A leaf in the woods, shaking the wake of a startled bird’s flight. But I’ll take it, with open arms. Because when spring comes, it melts the snow one flake at a time, and may be I just witnessed the first flake melting.
I ran. A grown man running with a swarm of screaming children. I didn’t care. I ran with wind blowing in my face, and a smile as wide as the valley of panjsher on my lips. I ran.”

My First First Week in the US
Posted by Watz as Uncategorized
Back to reality!! Harsh reality I must say. I am still in my same old bed in my dusty room cursing the strike going on at Frankfurt. I spent most part of the night in the Check-in area in the Anna International terminal. All packed and set to make my first visit to the US, I entered the airport and slowly made it through the snakelike long queue to the counter only to find out my connecting flight from Frankfurt to Washington DC has been cancelled due to the stupid strike at Frankfurt. They took my ticket and asked me to wait for a ‘few minutes’. I waited with a few other people who had the same problem. A bunch of eight who had a connecting flight to Atlanta were also stranded and sidelined because of this issue. The Lufthansa people took their own time to set things right. I was there at 10:45pm. After a while we were asked to move from where we were standing because they were setting up that space to check in passengers for another flight to Dubai. We were just being pushed around like mere pieces of baggage and not given proper information as to when we would be put on a flight. It took them quite a while to find out they could not put us on any flight within the next few hours and that I would have to travel the following day.
I was keeping myself occupied by making phone calls to tell my friends I would be in India for at least another day. My parents and relatives were waiting eagerly to find out what action was being taken by the Lufthansa officials. It was 1pm and still they had not found an alternate arrangement for me. The patient lad that I am, I did not create a big scene over there. It took a lot of pressurising and some blasting from my father to finally get me a ticket to my final destination. They handed me my new plan at 3:15am! What an experience! more than four hours at the airport on a night when I knew in a short while that I would not be travelling anytime soon. The flight plan they had come up with was not favourable and my dad took it up with our travel agent and came up with the plan of having me flown into the US on the 8th of August. So here I am, sitting at home with a very funny feeling.
Having said Goodbye to the whole of India, it feels very weird to meet and speak to all of them again and tell them I got screwed by a stupid workers strike in Frankfurt. Every few minutes I just think about what I am going through and laugh my ass off, for that’s all I can do. What a superb way to start my journey to the US. What was supposed to be my first week in the US, I am now spending in Chennai. God knows what more he has in store for me. I will just hope its all positive this time. And that I dont have to do a Tom Hanks(The Terminal- for the uneducated) role again and that I can write what I have written right at the top when I am actually on the flight to the US.

.Love..
January.
February.
March.
You still hurt.
.
..Bliss..
5 am.
faraway trucks roar.
in the pitter patter of the downpour.
The tea stall radio sings
Along the bicycle bell clings.
Thud. The newspaper all wet.
You pull over the blanket.
Its Sunday.
..Relationships…
Long after the storm.
The tree remained
Bent.
..Secrets..
Hiding my thoughts
At the back of the moon
hoping that
no one will find it there.
but it ditches me.
every night.
..Grief..
The last of the whisky over.
And the stones all into the pond.
The end of happiness.
The beginning of peace.

Waiting times!
Posted by a fan as Uncategorized
One keeps wondering whether everything was done right…the whole event gets rehearsed in mind 100 times…a small doubt can really move one into complete depression…did i answer that question correctly?…oh, i missed that point…did i really write the correct date in that form?…oh, i guess i submitted a statement which was more than 7 days olds…
On top of all this, when there has been string of failures, one gets into a self doubt..
Frankly, the mood can swing quite erratically in this waiting period and others will never know or can never really understand why we are like this…
Also, there are just so many known and unknown factors affecting a decision and this is exactly the reason one tends to believe in luck or in a higher faith.
The only solution is to stop thinking about that and the only time thinking stops is when one sleeps!!
Agreed that we should take things as it comes and we should really be brave enough to face the failures, but still, at the end of day, there is a sense of desperation and restlessness at heart…
The only thing i hate is, this implies that we have tied too much for that result and hence the stakes are high…But, can’t help it…sometimes, some things can only be either make or break…there can’t be less percentage or more percentage…
Maybe this is why, it’s mentioned in Gita as “Do your duty and don’t expect rewards”…Frankly, i guess i have realized that i am after all a human being!

Communism = Atheism ?
Posted by Hardik Ruparel as Uncategorized
One of my friends is from Kerala, and the other day he was telling me about how people consider any communist to be an atheist. He told me many other things that are exclusive to Kerala, and I was pretty surprised to say the least.
- Only two political parties have been ruling Kerala for many terms alternately. It’s almost like a decided phenomenon.
- Bus accidents is the major slice of deaths in Kerala, and despite knowing everything, the government refuses to act and punish the drivers responsible.
- And Lots More…
Anyway the highlight of this post of mine is the Kerala Text Book controversy, for those of you who do not know, a class VII social studies text book included a chapter which was found to be promoting Atheism. The people who are accusing are representing the Muslim and Christian communities, and the claim can obviously be justified because the text book is published by the government, which is lead by Marxists.
So, now we have :
Text Book published by Marxists
Marxists = Communists
Communists = Atheists
Thus, Text Book = Atheism
That’s the short way of explaining it. For those of you who aren’t convinced, let’s see the contents of the textbook. It basically reveals how ancient India had the caste system, and several newspaper clippings showing these acts of discrimination are published. The chapter also talks about various reform movements undertaken by Hindus, Muslims and Christians to fight caste discrimination.
Then comes the part, which has upset the state of Kerala, the state which we so proudly promote as having 99 % literacy ( Cmon.. Just because you sign your name, you don’t become literate)
This starts of with an imaginary situation in which a child named Jeevan is being admitted into a school, his father is a Muslim, and his mother a Hindu. The headmaster has to fill the column of Caste and Religion, and he asks the parents what should he fill. His parents instruct him to leave both of them blank. The headmaster then asks what religion would he pursue when he grew old. And his parents reply “In that case let him choose the religion of his choice.”
This dialog follows a few teachings from Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Christianity. And, in the end, a question is asked “What are the instructions of religions which aim at mutual love regarding human behaviour?” And finally, it is answered by saying “All religions aim at the glory of the mankind. Exhort to mutual love and respect.”
Now, I really don’t need to say a word after this. It’s most necessary that we realize that this text is just promoting communal harmony. The only glitch was, the title of this chapter is “No Religion for Jeevan” . It’s really obvious now, to what has happened. The highly literate people have read this topic, and have presumed that Jeevan stands for life ( Oh gimme a break.. Kerala and Hindi ?? ) and the chapter is saying :
“Dear Child, You should not choose any religion in your life.”
They clearly haven’t read a word beyond the title.
Now these protesters are the same people who’ll give you a mean look when you’re about to leave India. They’ll say : “India has given you so much. And is this what you give back to India ? ” and quite hypocritically they’ll give their heads a slow shake. The same people will look at your kids when they come to study in India and separate them as NRIs, and ask you to pay a thousand times extra. And when you retire and return to India, the same people will be looking to be included in the Fund for The Elderly that you established.
I really do not loathe Kerala, neither do I loathe the people ( they are lovely people, mind you.. ) . This post is against the hypocrites. Not against people from any state as such. So please feel free to comment keeping that in mind..

$100 Laptop announced by India
Posted by Hardik Ruparel as Uncategorized
The Indian Government has announced that it will be launching an economical laptop costing about $100 (Rs. 4000), although initially declaring that the laptop would cost only $10 (Rs. 400).
A transcript released states :
“The Indian Government would also offer assistance to 1,000 polytechnic institutes; 300 in public-private partnership mode and 400 in the private sector, besides taking care of the infrastructure and faculty shortages,” said Smt. D. Purandeswari, in the speech. “Further, to enable students make most out of the advanced technology; the Government also aims to provide 100 dollar laptops to students. Research in this direction is being already carried out at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. These steps will substantially take care of the quality of higher education, which, as I have mentioned earlier is an essential desideratum of economic growth.”
A very flowery statement, I must say. Many investors and market gurus are predicting the quick downfall of this project. It’s very easy to see why this may create a controversy. Here’s what I feel..
- Rs. 4000 is way too less for a laptop, and demand will be extremely high. Mass producing a laptop at this rate would be next to impossible unless handed over to a very responsible producer.
- Again, some sections of society will demand that there will be a quota for selling it to them, and at an even lower price, because everything provided by the government to them is subsidized. So why not a laptop too ? Thus government has to hand over the complete product to a private company.
- Distributing it to students exclusively will disappoint other people ( eg office goers, who actually need a laptop more than a student ).
I certainly hope Tata is keeping it’s eyes-n-ears open, considering them getting closer to the launch of the 1-lakh rupee car.
